Arnis in Madrid: Reviving the Filipino Warrior Spirit Abroad

For Filipinos living abroad, especially those growing up in cultures far from their homeland, maintaining a strong connection to Filipino heritage can be challenging. One powerful way to preserve this connection is through Arnis, the Philippines’ traditional martial art. More than just a fighting system, Arnis is a living link to our history connecting us to the warrior-forefathers who used these same principles and techniques to defend the Philippine islands for centuries.

In many parts of the world, Filipino culture is often represented mainly through food and dance. While these are important cultural expressions, Arnis reveals another dimension of Filipino identity the warrior spirit, discipline, and intellectual depth of our indigenous tactical systems.

Inspired by this vision, Museyong Buhay launched an initiative to invite Filipinos and non- Filipinos both children and adults in Madrid, Spain, to participate in the formation of an Arnis cultural troupe. The goal is to showcase the beauty, artistry, and cultural significance of Arnis through choreographed demonstrations and performances.

In February 2026, the organization was grateful to receive the enthusiastic support of several individuals in Madrid. Individuals including parents, children and locals expressed eagerness to take part in this meaningful cultural effort. Since then, both adult and youth groups have been conducting weekly Arnis presentation practices, working together to bring this initiative to life in preparation for the Philippine Independence Day celebration this coming June.

The training sessions are led by Guro Lyndon Elemia, with the assistance of Miss Mary June Solano. The activities are coordinated by Museyong Buhay President Miss Mae Tolentino and the organization’s officers, at Casa del Cura Centro Socio-Cultural, Plaza del 2 de Mayo ( Malasaña) Madrid.

Through this initiative, the Filipino community in Madrid hopes not only to celebrate Philippine independence but also to proudly share with the world a deeper and often overlooked part of Filipino culture the enduring legacy of Arnis and the Filipino warrior spirit.
